Symptoms of Foundation Problems

As a homeowner, it’s important to know the basic signs of foundation problems so you can prevent them from becoming worsening. There are interior and exterior symptoms of foundation damage, and your home could be impacted by both.

Interior Foundation Symptoms

  • Bowing Walls: The pressure from settlement can cause your basement walls to bow inward and crack or buckle.
  • Sticking Doors and Windows: As your foundation settles, it puts massive amounts of pressure on your home’s structure and can cause your doors and windows to “stick” and be difficult to open or close.
  • Uneven Floors: The settlement pressure can cause the floor joists in your crawl space to sag and result in uneven floors inside your home.
  • Wall Cracks: Interior wall cracks can range from small hairline cracks or much larger one. No matter what size the crack is, it will continue to get worse as your house continues to settle.

Exterior Foundation Symptoms

  • Collapsing Retaining Wall: If you have retaining walls near your home, foundation settlement can cause them to collapse.
  • Cracked or Tilted Chimney: Foundation settlement can cause your chimney to crack or tilt as the soils in the ground becomes less supportive.
  • Wall Cracks: Wall cracks can appear on the outside of your home. If you have exterior brick, it can appear as stair-step cracks in the brickwork.

It’s important to keep an eye out for these interior and exterior symptoms in order to catch foundation problems before they become worse.
